Ever since attending the Colour Elements event last week (read about the event) and being told I’m able to wear bright bold colours I’ve been thinking about ways to introduce more colour to my capsule wardrobe. My current wardrobe is far more colourful than my autumn capsule wardrobe which was pretty much all black. However, my wardrobe still lacks colour and everything is pretty neutral. So how can I add more colour, without going out and buying new clothes?
This is so obvious I’m a little embarrassed to admit I needed this pointed out to me. At the event last week I was told bright bold lip colours are a great way to add colour to a look. This is something I have done in the past without realising it, but I now I’m aware of the impact of makeup I’m going to try to use colour more. For example adding a bold red lip to a little black dress (see a little black dress worn with red lips
) or bright pink lips to jeans and a white shirt. My current favourite lip products to achieve bold bright lips are the NYX soft matte lip creams (available in boots
Accessories are a great way to add a little more colour to your wardrobe. Think about adding some bright bags and scarves to your wardrobe. If your wardrobe is made up of lots of neutral pieces then you can have fun with your accessories, using them to add colour to your outfits. I have a few bright coloured bags which I can wear with all of the colours in my wardrobe (read what’s in my bag
and Yoshi bags
to see my bright bags). You can completely change the way a piece of clothing looks when you add different accessories, meaning you’ll have more ways to wear it. I would suggest investing in a bright handbag and a few colourful scarves which you can add to your neutral outfits as a pop of colour.
Jewellery can also be a great way to add some colour to your outfits, it’s also much more subtle than a bold lip or bright bag. Colourful jewellery can range from a bold statement necklace to a hint of colour with a gemstone in your ring. For my 30th my husband gave me a ruby ring and I love how the ring is a subtle flash of red, it’s enough to be seen but not in your face. A bold colourful statement necklace always looks great against a plain top and is an easy way to add some colour to your outfit.
Nail polish is another subtle way to add a little colour to an outfit. If you dress in neutral colours you can get away with wearing any colour you want on your nails. I know I have a few colours of nail polish which I love but would never buy clothes or accessories in that colour so nail polish is a great way to incorporate it into an outfit. If you aren’t sure about bright colours on your hands try starting with your toes. My current favourite nail polishes are Essie polishes (available in boots
Colourful shoes are another great way to add a pop of colour to a neutral outfit. I have a pair of red lace-up flats (my lace-up flats
) which look great with pretty much any outfit. A flash of leopard print or metallic on your shoes always adds a little interest to a simple outfit.
The Statement Piece
If you love a colour, you may want to add one or two statement colourful pieces to your capsule wardrobe to satisfy your need for colour. Your capsule wardrobe should reflect you and your lifestyle so if you love colour add a little to your wardrobe. In all my capsule wardrobes I’ve added at least one coloured item (normally red) which I’ll wear when I start to get fed up with black and grey.
