In case you hadn’t already guessed I love fashion and style (especially ethical fashion) and I love learning new tips and tricks to help make me look a little more stylish. I’m certainly not claiming to be a fashion expert, in fact, I’m more likely to be home in my sweats than in the frow. However, that doesn’t stop me wanting to look good when I do go out. Today I thought I would share a few of the tips and tricks I’ve picked up with you.
1. Forget Trends
Don’t worry about what’s fashionable or on trend right now and focus on your own personal style. No one wants to be a slave to fashion.
2. Size is Just a Number
Focus on finding clothes that fit you right and forget about the size on the label. Clothing sizes fluctuate so much between shops you could be a 8 in one store and a 12 in another so the number means nothing.
3. Quality over Quantity
Focus on building a wardrobe of quality pieces which will last you for years to come rather than having a wardrobe stuffed full of poor quality fast fashion.
4. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Accessories
You can completely transform a basic outfit with accessories. Pile on the jewellery, scarves and belts to transform your outfit.
5. Find a Good Tailor
Clothes that fit well make a huge difference find a good tailor and use them. This is especially important if your petite and need clothes shortened or taken in. Even better learn how to tailor clothes yourself to save some money.
6. Lengthen Legs with Nude Shoes
Make your legs look longer by wearing a pair of nude court shoes. The same applies if your wearing black tights, add a pair of black heels to give the illusion of long legs.
7. Forget About Brands
Remember when you were a teenager and wore the ‘in’ brands head to toe? You shouldn’t be doing that anymore forget about the ‘IT’ brands and labels and focus on clothes you love.
8. Mix Textures
Create interest in your outfit by mixing textures. Try wearing a leather jacket with a silk dress or suede with knitwear.
9. If in Doubt Wear Stripes
Everyone needs a good stripe top in their wardrobe which you can throw on whenever you don’t know what to wear.
10. Or a Button Down Shirt
If stripes don’t work try throwing on a button-down shirt, even better a striped button down. This is an easy way to look smart without any effort.
11. Make a Statement
Don’t be afraid to stand out and make a statement with your outfit. Style should be fun and if you want to stand out from the crowd then go for it.
12. Focus on Lifestyle
Your wardrobe should work for the lifestyle you have and not a fantasy lifestyle. Make sure everything in your wardrobe is something you will wear and works for your lifestyle.
13. Don’t Be Afraid of Colour
Don’t be scared to step away from all the blacks and greys and add a little colour to your outfit. Whether it’s a bright red lip or a green dress don’t be afraid of colour.
14. Or Statement Pieces
You shouldn’ be afraid of statement piece either. Want to wear that sequin skirt or leopard print dress then don’t be afraid to go for it.
15. Comfort is Key
All of your clothes should be comfortable to wear, style isn’t about being in pain or uncomfortable in your clothes.
16. Focus on Coats
Find your perfect coat, it can make or break your look. In the winter we wear our coats nearly every day so find one you love and rock it every day.
17. Proportion is Key
Play with the proportions of your outfit. Wear a loose fitting top with tight bottoms or looser bottoms with a tight top.
18. Add Heels
Heels can really elevate an outfit making it look so much more stylish. A good pair of heels can make boyfriend jeans and a tee look like a street style outfit.
19. Know What You Love
Know the styles and clothes you love and look for them when shopping. If you find an outfit you love, wear it again and again.
20. Layer, Layer, Layer
Layers not only keep you warm, but they also look great. Throwing on a couple of layers is a great way to wear your summer clothes year round and make mixing textures easy.
21. If You’ve Got It, Flaunt It
Don’t be afraid to show off your favourite feature. Got great legs then show them off with short skirts or show off a slim waist with crop tops or a belt.
